Nutrition Foundations for GLP-1 Success

By Andrew Jecklin, PMHNP | Stillpoint Integrative Psychiatry & Wellness – Virginia

Why Nutrition Still Matters—Even on GLP-1s

GLP-1 medications like semaglutide and tirzepatide make it easier to eat less, but they don’t replace nutrition.

In fact, because appetite naturally decreases, what you eat becomes even more important.

At Stillpoint Integrative Psychiatry & Wellness, we help patients create a simple, nourishing structure that maintains strength, supports mood, and maximizes the benefits of their medical program.

1. Protein: The Anchor of Metabolic Health

When appetite drops, protein is usually the first nutrient people unintentionally under-consume.

That’s a problem—because protein preserves muscle, supports neurotransmitters, and keeps metabolism active.

Aim for:

  • Roughly 25–30 grams of protein per meal
  • A palm-sized portion of lean meat, eggs, or Greek yogurt at each sitting
  • Optional shakes or collagen for convenience

Adequate protein helps prevent fatigue, brittle hair, and slowed metabolism—common pitfalls of rapid weight loss.

2. Hydration and Electrolytes

GLP-1 medications slow digestion and can cause mild dehydration, which worsens nausea or fatigue.

Water alone isn’t always enough; electrolyte balance matters too.

Try to include:

  • 2–3 liters of water daily
  • Pinch of mineral salt or a sugar-free electrolyte mix
  • Herbal teas for gentle hydration

If thirst decreases with appetite, set reminders or link hydration to routine habits (like before each meal).

3. Fiber and Gut Health

GLP-1s slow gastric emptying, which can lead to constipation if fiber is too low.

Include soluble fiber sources such as chia seeds, berries, oatmeal, or cooked vegetables.

Pairing fiber with water keeps digestion smooth and supports the gut microbiome—key to hormone and mood regulation.

4. Fats for Satiety and Hormone Balance

Healthy fats (avocado, olive oil, nuts, seeds, fatty fish) stabilize blood sugar and keep hormones balanced.

Just a tablespoon or two per meal can sustain energy, reduce cravings, and enhance nutrient absorption.

5. Simple, Balanced Meal Structure

Patients on GLP-1s often thrive on three smaller, nutrient-dense meals per day.

Here’s a balanced pattern:

TimeExample Meal
MorningScrambled eggs with spinach, olive oil, and a side of berries
MiddayChicken and quinoa bowl with mixed vegetables and avocado
EveningSalmon or tofu with roasted vegetables and a drizzle of olive oil

If nausea or fullness occurs, focus on small, frequent bites of protein-rich food instead of large meals.

6. Supplements That Support GLP-1 Nutrition

Some nutrients become even more essential during reduced intake:

  • B12 and glycine — already included in Stillpoint’s compounded formulation to enhance energy and tolerability
  • Magnesium glycinate — supports muscle, mood, and digestion
  • Vitamin D3 + K2 — for metabolic and immune health
  • Omega-3s — reduce inflammation and improve insulin sensitivity

Supplementation ensures your metabolism runs smoothly even as calorie intake decreases.

7. The Mental Side of Nutrition

As appetite changes, old habits sometimes resurface—skipping meals entirely or feeling guilty about hunger.

Remember: the goal isn’t to eat less forever; it’s to eat better, with awareness.

Rebuilding a calm, trusting relationship with food allows metabolism to stabilize long-term.

Nutrition as a Restorative Practice

When paired with GLP-1 therapy, nutrition becomes more than fuel—it becomes a tool of restoration.

Each meal is an opportunity to nourish mood, hormones, and energy, not just control calories.

At Stillpoint, we guide you toward that equilibrium—where food supports both mind and metabolism.
